Course 1: parsnip soup with crispy beets and capers, orange zest

Course 2: mussels and brioche in a cream and white wine sauce

Course 3: palate cleansing break. Nice frisée, cress, candied walnuts and pecorino salad

Course 4: braised short ribs, potato purée, brussel sprouts & hangar steak with frites

Course 5: killer dessert chocolate ice cream, pudding and cookie crumble with EVOO and salt & anti-chocolate creme brûlée with real vanilla bean.

That’s the trend, says writer Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl. “Fruit bombs,” she says, are out.

These wines (so jammy, so big, so plush) show well at a giant tasting, but they do not show so well at your table. You put one of these cabernet sauvignons next to a roast lamb dish and it’s like putting Godzilla at the table with Bambi. You don’t get to taste what you’re eating.

So Dara brought three low-alcohol bottles into the studio with Lynne for a tasting: La Fiera Moscato, Heinz Eifel Riesling Kabinett and Già Langhe Rosso. They made some notes.

I thought this would have a nice touch of apples to it, but WHOA. It’s basically a glass of sparkling apple juice. There’s supposedly some wheat beer in there, but all I taste are tart and sweet apples. More apple-y than any apple cider I’ve ever tried, even. It’s delicious, but it just doesn’t remind me of beer… at all. What an odd animal.

Old Arizona kind of rocks. This multi-purpose venue is nestled at the end of Eat Street and plays hosts to events, movies, performing arts, weddings and then some.

I had visited the venue last summer for the brilliant Burger Night celebration, however, with so many people around I didn’t have a chance to casually stroll the building to snap photos. A couple weekends ago I got my opportunity when I helped out a friend for a photo shoot inside Old Arizona.

Each room of the building is meticulously and creatively decorated. I was particularly impressed with the Chocolate Lounge near the front of the building. It was cozy and welcoming, ideal place to kick-up your heels and light a cigar. Check out some of my shots of the Chocolate Lounge.

Old Arizona is one of those enigmas of Minneapolitan nightlife — who goes there? What do they sell? We agree that Burger Night was rockin’ as hell, though!

Naval hero Marc Mitscher’s visit to his hometown of Hillsboro—another Wisconsin community with a substantial Czech population—made the front page of the Wisconsin State Journal on July 12, 1945. The caption that accompanied this photograph by Arthur M. Vinje read:

With all Hillsboro striving to honor Vice-Admiral Marc A. Mitscher today, Bessie Hooker, maid in the Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hart home, baked him a poppy seed kolache, a favorite Bohemian dish for which she is famous. The dish looks like pie and raises like bread, and ground poppy seed is what gives it its distinctive flavor. It was to be a surprise for the admiral, who was lucky that Mrs. Hart happened to have some hard-to-get poppy seed in the house.

This recipe for kolache published in the Milwaukee Journal in 1962 offers three options for filling: prune, apricot, or poppy seed.
